Several riders
at the AMA Dirt Track Grand Championships are repeat customers,
and for good reason. One, it's an awesome week of motorcycle
racing. Two, the kids are just plain fast and enjoy the
world-class competition. So, it's not surprising that you get
experienced champions on the box.
But every
year, there are still first-time winners, kids such as Cody
Annable from Sumner, Washington, who won the Friday TT race in
the 50cc Peewee, 4-8 Stock class. And he did so in an exciting
way, with a last turn pass for the win.
Cayde
Schmulbach got the holeshot and led Annable and Alec Espos for
most of the race. Annable kept it close, however, and nearly
made the pass over the second jump on the last lap.
However,
Annable got pushed wide going into the final turn and gave
Schmulbach back the lead. It looked like Annable was
stuck with second, but Schmulbach made a mistake exiting the
turn onto the front straight and Annable blasted past and held
on for the win.
"Man, it's
pretty awesome," said Annable, who gets support from
Downtown Harley Davidson and American Custom Cycle back in
Washington. "I got a bad start and was in second most of the
race, but got by. When I saw him go wide, all I could think was,
oh, man, I got him."
The best part
was Dad's reaction when Annable got back to the pits.
"He was
crying," Annable said. "But it was a happy cry, though."

Dad
was done crying by the time we caught up to Team
Annable in the pits. Grandpa? Grandpas are too tough
to cry. |
